My 10 year-old son told me about something to do in the pool called a vortex circle (or vortex something). After explaining to me what it was, I said, “How come I’ve never heard of that before? I was a kid once.” “I doubt that,” he replied dryly.

Should I Be Worried?
One of my sons, 8, was naming his body parts. He told me he named his belly button “The Dark Pit of No Return.” This kid is going places.
Media Moment
Whenever I meet someone in their 20s, the first thing I think is that they’re 20 years younger than me. Then the instant denial wears off and I realize they’re actually 30 years younger than me. Thirty years!! I’ve gotten to the age now where 20 years isn’t so long. Aging is weird.
What’s it to You?

The Small Ones Can Make a Big Difference
When we moved here I was so happy to find a small, family-owned pharmacy right near our house. Pharmacies, hardware stores, stationery stores, and bookstores like these are pretty rare these days (at least in large cities like Los Angeles.) Most of the small pharmacies left are in medical buildings, but my neighborhood one standsContinue reading “The Small Ones Can Make a Big Difference”
Vehicles of Love
When our kids were small, since we don’t have any family near us we had to hire sitters for help (and Lord knows we needed it). We relied on one family in particular—a mother and her two daughters. Recently one of the daughters came over who we haven’t seen since we moved 4 years ago.Continue reading “Vehicles of Love”
I’m Lucky If I Wear Eyeliner
When I was single I used to see those moms with their young children in the grocery store. You know the ones I’m talking about – they’re wearing an oversized T shirt and sweats with tennis shoes, flip-flops or clogs. They have little or no make-up on and their hair is often in a ponytail,Continue reading “I’m Lucky If I Wear Eyeliner”
Just another day
It’s 12:34pm on Tuesday. The kids are at school. I’m repeatedly trying to finish up the dishes from this morning. I just found cold coffee in the microwave that was heated up and forgotten about at least an hour ago. The dryer, only partially loaded (and having been that way for at least 1.5 hours),Continue reading “Just another day”
Menopause Revisited: The Power of the Aging Vagina
Several years ago I was talking with a group of mom friends and the topic of vaginal rejuvenation surgery came up (you know, like it always does). None of us knew exactly what it was. My guess is most people don’t know exactly what it is until they or someone they know wants it. Anyway,Continue reading “Menopause Revisited: The Power of the Aging Vagina”
Another New Hybrid Name
We’re Jewish and we have a poodle. Does this make our dog a Jewdle? Or would it be a Jew-i-poo?
