I’m getting lost in the world of Curtis Mayfield again. It’s a beautiful, soulful, psychedelic-twinged, extremely wonderful world I could be happy living in forever. Apart from his music, which is, well…divine…I love soaking in the endless nuances, layers, and dynamic, ever-shifting tones of his voice, which is somehow simultaneously simple and complex. Then there’s the socially conscious lyrics. If there ever were a musician who came here to wake us up to beauty and reality, love and need, despair and the motivation to change things for the better, it was Curtis Mayfield. I only wish we could’ve had him here with us longer, especially through these times we’re facing now.
“Depression is part of my mind
The sun never shines
On the other side of town.
The need here is always for more
There’s nothing good in store
On the other side of town.”
